Texas Longhorns receiver Xavier Worthy is making his mark on the field and silencing frustrations of last year's disappointing loss to the TCU Horned Frogs. In a hard-fought game, the No. 7 Longhorns emerged victorious with a 29-26 win in Fort Worth.
Worthy's performance was nothing short of exceptional. He finished the game with 10 catches for 137 yards, both season-best marks for him. This also marked the third-highest receiving yardage he has achieved in a single collegiate game. It's clear that Worthy has been instrumental in the team's success, especially after notching 108 yards against the Oklahoma Sooners earlier this season.
After the game, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian couldn't help but praise Worthy's outstanding play. "The efficiency that he's playing the game with right now, I'm really proud of him," Sarkisian said. "He's playing with an extreme amount of toughness, he’s playing physical, he’s winning one-on-one matchups and Quinn trusts him.”
Sarkisian also commended Worthy for his dedication behind the scenes. The receiver has put in extra work to improve his catching abilities, particularly after facing criticism for drops last season. It was later discovered that Worthy had been playing with a broken hand, highlighting his resilience and determination.
While Adonai Mitchell scored the only receiving touchdown of the game for Texas, it was Worthy who helped the offense find its rhythm during a crucial 19-point second quarter. This proved to be pivotal as the Longhorns held on to their lead, ultimately securing the win. TCU's comeback attempt fell just short due to the points Texas had accumulated earlier in the evening.
Worthy's performance could have been even more impressive if not for a few missed opportunities. In the second half, the Texas offense faced challenges and relied heavily on the running game, limiting Worthy's opportunities. Nevertheless, his contribution was undeniable.
With this exceptional showing, Worthy aims to maintain his momentum as the Longhorns prepare to face the Iowa State Cyclones in Ames, Iowa. The game is scheduled for next Saturday at 7 p.m. CT. It's clear that Worthy's talent and determination will continue to be key factors in Texas' success.
